New acquisition - Japanese Transformers D-50: Motormaster and his Stunticons

Not many acquisitions lately (although I did get the MakeToys Green Giant). Walked around the shops yesterday because E was busy and saw this set.

Discussed it with my buddies on the other side of the world using What'sApp and in the end decided to get it - Menasor was my favourite childhood combiner after all.

Here is a preliminary picture, more to come later.

All pieces are MIB, strong C9 condition, complete and unused (sticker sheets unapplied).

  1. Glad to see that you got these, HD! :)

And what is funny is that when I was a kid, my favorite combiner was Superion. Now, it has to be Defensor. That is, when it comes to the Autobots/Cybertrons. :p

And speaking of acquisitions - I received the "Alternity" version of Ultra Magnus. It has the "name typo" issue as well, but it is G1 and fills that gap while I look for both the Scramble City reissue and G-2 versions. :)

    1. Thanks Kuma Nin! I think this set is very neat too and am happy to get them. The only downside I guess, is that they do not come cheap! Hahaha. Congrats on getting alter it's Ultra Magnus! Although I don't collect that series, I think they are pretty neat and will fit nicely with MP10's trailer, will fit into it I meant to say.

What's with the name mix up issue? Is it a rare variant?

    2. Also, don't forget that Fansproject is finally coming up with their take on Menasor. Can't wait for that one. Also saw from your other post that you had gotten the Green Giant. I have the yellow one, and can't say I am impressed. With the small forearm in combined mode, it reminds me quite a bit of God Sigma.

    3. Ha ha ha... I can so relate. Because I was disputing about getting "Encore" Sky Lynx, because of the price versus my budget, but decided not to because he did not appear in any of the Japanese exclusive G1 Transformers series. ("Arms Micron" Arcee is the only acceptation to this rule because that version of Arcee turned out to be my only favorite non-G1 character.)

And thanks. :) I am actually finding the Binaltech portion of the G1 timeline to be interesting. Because Convoy does not die, Ultra Magnus defeats Unicron with the use of the Matrix of Leadership (Which has his MP version be tied to this), and it appears that Dai Atlas both inherited the Matrix and became an honorary Convoy (hence his role in the "Convoy Corp.").

And the name issue? I think it is due to the fact that it was also sold at Transformers China Carnival. And much like Dai Atlas, which was an Asian market exclusive, it received new packaging... "Engrish" names (versus the Kanji-only spelling when it came to the character names)... And nobody to make sure that there were no QC issues tied to the name(s) or the issues people have noted.

    4. @ Roger - I've not heard of the FP Menasor, but have seen the TFC Superion. will have to check it out. I did get Green Giant, its a very nice toy, but in my reckoning, too difficult to transform.

    5. @ Kuma Nin - hahaha, funny thing about the QC issues. Seem to be prevalent. At least they only got the names mixed up and not other things like toy parts wrong. Interesting about the BT stories, I have no idea what the stories are, but you obviously read Japanese and would be able to read them for yourself.

So then, is BT tied into the Alternity line and then also tied into MPs in terms of story?

    6. Hi HD, yep, in general I don't like G1 single toys anymore due to their simplicity however I still love G1 combiners precisely because of their simple nature!!! Today's combiners are just too time consuming to transform and the process is often times not too enjoyable. The other day after I had finished combining my yellow Maketoys Giant, I took out my Predaking and Piranacon and boy did I have some major fun with those. Maybe I am just getting old ....

    7. I think in a strange way, I'm now back to liking G1 precisely for their simplicity, I can do without the complexity of transformation and the gimmicks in today's toys. I much prefer those days where the *gimmick* was transformation itself and not some silly chip or light or sound. While I like the designs for some of these recent combiners, they are just to complex to transform and no longer fun....

    8. @ HD: Yeah. It caught me off-guard when I found out that the box says "Ultla Magnus"... But I guess he joined Carb, Minelba(?), and currently Dai Atras with the name errors.

And from what I have read, Binaltech is Takara's Alternators. And that their new bodies were built to counter the Cosmic Space Rust. That, and I read up on this stuff at TFwiki. ^^

      Oh... And I ended up ordering a MISB "Encore" Sky Lynx. ^^;

    9. @ Kuma - well, what are errors could after years and years, become truth and canon. Strange but true. My question was whether BT tied into Alternity (not Alternators). Alternity is the more recent line with the smaller scaled cars. Do you have an idea whether their stories are linked?

      Congrats on the Sky Lynx!

    1. Thanks for the kind words Paul. While it's odd that this particular Jap release came with a bubble and not styro, I think it just makes it even harder to find a pristine nice sample of this piece...

    2. Yeah the majority of C-50 and D-50 came with a plastic insert, I much prefer the sytro - esp for MISB! Going after all the takara combiner sets now HD? A mint set of the technobots are taking me forever to find.

    3. @ Skullcruncher - my understanding is that *all* C-50s and D-50s came in plastic bubble insert. I've not seen or heard from any one otherwise. If there are styros for these babies, that's groundbreaking news and I-need-that-styro-yesterday!!!

Not really into getting Jap box combiners. This set was just a frolic, cos Menasor is one of my favourite combiners and D-50 is so rare. Getting for the heck of it and as a frolic.... hahaha

  4. Giftsets are cool and all, but there is something about assembling the combiner groups in their individual packaging. Congrats!

    1. It's certainly something. I usually prefer individual boxed combiners unless their individual packaging is not nice (eg: dinoforce). Cheers!
